5 Things Not to Do If You're Ever Arrested

If you're living in the United States, there is a high possibility that you've been arrested or know someone who has been arrested. About 4.9 million people are arrested and booked every year. Unfortunately, most people make apparent mistakes after they're arrested that get them into more trouble. Here are five things not to do if you're ever arrested.

1. Do Not Resist Arrest

Many people make the mistake of resisting arrest by the police. Resisting arrest is an offense that can put you into more trouble. Let the police arrest you if they have decided to do so. Not resisting arrest will prevent the police from using excessive force on you. You're also likely to be freed if they find you haven't committed a crime.

2. Do Not Cooperate

While many people often cooperate with the police, it's not a good idea. Although you can't lie to the police, you can't cooperate with them either. The police can trick you with leniency to make you cooperate. Don't fall for the trick, as they can make you admit to wrongdoing. Talk to your lawyer before doing anything.

3. Don't Say Anything

Criminal defense attorneys will tell you that talking to the police is a big mistake when you're under arrest. You can only talk to them to provide basic information about yourself, including your name and where you come from. You can also inform them to contact your lawyer. Anything you say to a police officer can be used against you later in a court of law.

4. Running From the Police

You may be tempted to run from the police when you get arrested. Chances are, the police will track you down and charge you with more offenses. Also, the police are allowed to use reasonable, excessive force to arrest you if you're running away from them. Resist running from the police when you get arrested.

5. Don't Fail to Contact Your Lawyer

Many people fail to contact an attorney when they get arrested. You should exercise your right to an attorney. An attorney can help you navigate your case and reduce the charges against you.

Getting arrested, especially for the first time, can be very challenging. Avoid resisting the police or bad-mouthing them. Keep quiet and contact your attorney. Contact criminal defense attorneys today if you need help with a case.
